Beyond the mapped universe

Past the last section the Atlas keeps going: real stars, worlds, nebulae and galaxies first, then a simulated universe. It needs a browser with WebGL 2; here is everything it can take you to.

How the scale works

Within 9.6 million light-years of the Sun the Atlas is drawn to scale: one unit is about 96 light-years, so the whole Local Group fits.

Beyond that, every direction and every apparent size seen from the Sun stays exact while depth is compressed, out to the edge of the observable universe, 46.5 billion light-years away.

The real catalogues behind the Atlas reach about 300 million light-years from the Sun. Beyond that the universe is simulated and labelled SIMULATED: its cosmic web is constrained by the measured positions of real clusters.
